Toyota gives you plenty of ways to customize your Tundra, too, with a number of trim levels, cab and bed configurations, drivetrains, and styles. That’s to say nothing of the available accessories that can help you essentially build your perfect pickup from bumper to bumper.

What’s New in the 2019 Tundra?

The big news for the 2019 Tundra model year is the return of the TRD Pro, which took a one-year hiatus from the lineup. This version of the Tundra, featuring its signature high-performance Fox shocks, gives you substantial updates including standard Toyota Safety Sense P, a high-performance dual exhaust with black chrome tips, a retro-style grille with Toyota lettering, and new 18-inch BBS alloy wheels that shave off an impressive 14 pounds of weight.

This model year continues to excel in all the right ways, giving you ample ability to customize your Tundra until it’s perfect for you and your driving needs. There are six available trims for the 2019 model year:

  • SR
  • SR5
  • Limited
  • Platinum
  • 1794 Edition
  • TRD Pro

Choose among a variety of cab sizes and bed lengths – Double Cab and CrewMax, Short Bed, Standard Bed, Long Bed – and powertrains ranging from a 4.6L V8 to a 5.7L V8 Flex Fuel. The Tundra is as mighty, versatile, and powerful as it is comfortable, well-equipped, and refined on the interior.

History of the Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra debuted with its 2000 model. It was a bit larger than the T100 it replaced and had the biggest initial vehicle sales of any Toyota up to that time. It was offered with a 3.4L V6 or a 4.7L V8, with a TRD supercharger offered for the V6 from the start and the V8 the following year. The Double Cab joined the lineup in 2004, a year after some updates to the grille. 2005 saw a new 4L V6 engine and updates to the existing V8 that included variable valve timing technology. This year also saw the 5-speed manual become a 6-speed and the 4-speed automatic become a 5-speed. At the end of the first generation, the Toyota Tundra could tow between 6,900 and 7,100 pounds, depending on the configuration.

Toyota showed off the second-generation Tundra during the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, complete with styling cues from the midsize Tacoma and the Toyota FTX concept. It stood out with fenders that bulged in a way that resembled biceps. The towing capacity increased to more than 10,000 pounds, while the payload passed 2,000. There was a new 5.7L V8 with a 6-speed automatic, while the 4.7L V8 and 4L V6 carried over. When this Tundra became available in 2007, it had 31 different configurations between the wheelbases, transmissions, cabs, and bed lengths. Toyota made adjustments that helped construction workers, like the deck rail system, headrests that accommodate a hard hat, and the integrated tow hitch. It also added features like Bluetooth®*, a bigger center console, and a backup camera.
