Toyota Corolla: More Than Just a Compact Sedan

In the search for a fun, efficient, technology-packed, and incredibly safe sedan, the Toyota Corolla stands at the head of the pack. This is actually the only model in its class to come standard with collision avoidance, which is part of the Toyota Safety Sense P system. Thanks to this and other safety features, the Corolla has been awarded for its advanced safety. In addition to the advanced driver-assistive features, the Toyota Corolla comes packed with other technology, including standard Entune Audio and an available 7-inch touchscreen featuring navigation. Those you pass can check out its aggressively sporty front end and standard Bi-LED headlights or the available Multi-LED headlights that come complete with LED accent lights. Certain Corollas even have a rear spoiler to give passersby an idea of your sedan's sporty driving feel and efficiency. Excellent gas mileage on the highway, driving the Corolla means you spend less time at the gas station and more time enjoying your drive.

History Leading to the Current Corolla

Because the 2017 Corolla has a 50th Anniversary Special Edition, it should be no surprise that this Toyota has been around for 50 years. The Corolla's production began in 1966, although it didn't arrive in the United States until the 1969 model year. It was small and simple with a 60-horsepower engine that was all you needed. In 1971, the wheelbase got a bit longer, there was an automatic gearbox, and it got 13 more horsepower. Later in the generation, a 1.6-liter and 5-speed automatic arrived. The next generation, which started in 1975, included five variations.

The Corolla Sport Coupe was introduced the following year. The fourth generation began in 1979. However, 1983 was more exciting, as Tonka replaced OHV engines with an SOHC design and aluminum cylinder heads. 1984 introduced the option of front-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive officially left in 1988. By 1993, the Corolla was in its seventh generation and had grown enough to be a compact as opposed to a sub-compact. You can see the most recent Corolla history in the currently available used models.
