The Toyota Highlander: Family Friendly and Capable

The Toyota Highlander is an appealing option for families who want style, features, versatility, and capability. The Highlander has enough room to seat eight passengers, depending on how you choose to configure it, or you can swap out the second-row bench seat for captain's chairs for added comfort; these can even be heated. Thanks to the size of the Highlander, it should come as no surprise that it has an expansive cargo area. Folding down both rows of rear seats will give you 83.7 cubic feet for anything you need to bring with you, including furniture and bikes. Traveling around Texas is more fun when you have more room! Come see us today at Everett Toyota in Mt. Pleasant so we can get you riding off in a roomy Toyota Highlander.

What's New in the 2017 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander was completely redesigned a few years ago, and the 2017 model marks the first major updates since that redesign. While the body of the 2017 Highlander is identical to that of the previous model year, the styling has changed significantly. The trapezoidal grille is even larger, reaching nearly to the bumper's bottom. You will notice that the new grille's trim varies based on trim with silver, chrome, or gloss-black slats. Rounding out the exterior changes, the Highlander's bumpers have exaggerated corners and both the headlights and taillights are reshaped, with the latter now including LED lighting elements as standard. Inside, the Limited and Limited Platinum trims are now available with a bench seat in the second row instead of the captain's chairs, which were the only choice last year.

Although the 3.5-liter V6 powertrain in the 2017 Highlander may seem familiar, it is actually unique from the 2016's V6. This all-new engine has 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, increases of 25 horses and 15 pound-feet. Thanks to some adjusted engineering and the new 8-speed automatic transmission, the Highlander's new engine is also more efficient and features automatic stop/start. The Highlander Hybrid has its own new V6 with 29 mpg* combined. Perhaps the biggest change for the 2017 Highlander is that Toyota Safety Sense P now comes standard; it was optional for 2016. There are four additional USB ports, and the Highlander Hybrid is now available as an LX or XLE, lowering its starting price.

Exploring the Toyota Highlander History

The 2001 Toyota Highlander was the first time this large SUV was available. At first, it was only offered in two trims and had two rows of seats with room for up to five people. This original Highlander came standard with air conditioning, cruise control, and a CD player with options like heated front seats, a power moonroof, keyless entry, leather upholstery, and three-zone automatic climate control. It ran on a 155-horsepower 2.4-liter engine or a 220-horsepower V6.

The 2004 Highlander saw a mid-generation refresh with a new grille and redesigned headlights plus the addition of an optional third row. The Highlander Hybrid was first available as a 2006 model year, the same year a Sport trim was added. The second-generation Toyota Highlander arrived as a 2008 model and grew, providing more interior space. It also got a 270-horsepower V6 engine from the RAV4 and Camry and came standard with features like antilock brakes, hill start assist, and traction control.
